How Timed Multiplication Drills Helped My Child Master Times Tables

As a parent, watching your child struggle with math can be stressful. Last year my 3rd grader was still counting on fingers for basic facts. We tried flashcards and apps, but nothing stuck until we added daily timed drills.

Here’s what changed everything:

Week 1: Slow and frustrating — lots of mistakes on 6×7, 8×9, etc.

Week 2: Noticeable improvement in speed

Week 3: Confidence skyrocketed — my child started volunteering to answer questions in class

The secret wasn’t more time. It was consistent, short, focused practice with immediate feedback.

Key tips that worked for us:

• Set a 5-minute timer per page

• Review missed facts the next day (don’t move on until they’re solid)

• Celebrate every completed page — stickers or extra playtime work wonders

• Use word problems to show real-life use (e.g., “If each box has 7 apples…”)

That experience led me to create a simple 30-day workbook designed specifically for 3rd graders. It includes:

- 20 problems per daily drill

- Gradual increase in difficulty

- Real-world word problems

- Full answer key at the back

If your child is in 3rd grade and still shaky on multiplication facts 1–12, this structured approach can make a big difference in just one month.
